Canon strengthens its 4K and 8K portfolio with XF605 camera and new zoom lens
Canon debuts the XF605 professional 4K camcorder with a 1.0 type CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV7 processor, and a 15x 4K L-series optical zoom lens with FHD 30x Advanced Zoom.
The XF605 is a camera capable of working at 4K 60p/50p, 4:2:2, 10-bit and Full HD with a high frame rate of up to 120p in a small form factor. Powered by a 1.0-type CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV 7 processor, this camera performs at the highest level demanded by today’s professionals.
The XF605 offers a variety of options for custom imaging, which can be adjusted to meet different needs and offer greater flexibility in post or on location, including HDR (HLG/PQ), Canon Log3 and user-created LOOK files.
Employing the same 5-axis image stabilization system used in Canon’s XF and XA series, the XF605 produces continuous recordings, even in dynamic shooting scenarios. It features four image stabilization (IS) options, accessible by combining different settings in Standard, Dynamic and Motorized IS, allowing users to select the most appropriate and effective IS operation for the working environment.
With a high-magnification 4K L-series lens, the XF605 can work with 15x optical zoom in 4K and 30x advanced zoom in Full HD, ideal for recording subjects in the distance.
The XF605 employs Canon’s fast and accurate Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus System, which means that for the first time an XF series camcorder features Canon’s Eye AF (eye tracking) and EOS iTR AF X intelligent head detection and tracking function. This advanced system is capable of maintaining sharp focus on an individual, even if they move away from the camera. A new Direct Touch user interface allows users to quickly and intuitively select subjects to focus on, as well as control on-screen settings, menu navigation and playback.
Versatile and simple
Approximately 10% smaller and 600 grams lighter than the XF705, the XF605 weighs about 2 kilograms. A comfortable and easy-to-use handheld camera that takes the strain out of recording on the move. Designed with the solo user in mind, it combines portability with a new multi-function accessory shoe, designed to expand the XF605’s capabilities with future accessories.
The first of these is TEAC’s CA-XLR2d-C high-definition XLR microphone adapter. This adapter allows XLR inputs to be assigned to the four audio channels available on the XF605, providing greater flexibility when recording sound. The camcorder also responds to the rise of live streaming over the last year, with IP streaming capability supporting multiple protocols, remote control for multi-camera operations in conjunction with Canon’s PTZ camera range, and the addition of UVC for use as a simple webcam via USB-C.
With two SD card slots and multiple recording options, it can record in different file formats, resolutions, color sampling and proxies simultaneously on separate cards. It also makes it possible for images to be played back simultaneously over different 12G-SDI and HDMI connections, which can be streamed to any combination of monitors, broadcast and recording systems, to work in both live and pre-recorded workflows.
Ideal for recording on the go, the XF605 is compatible with Canon’s new Content Transfer Mobile (CTM) app, which allows users to edit news metadata before and after capture and import recorded images from camera to mobile, enabling instant transfer to broadcast station servers, for example.
10×16 KAS S Lens
Also new from Canon is the 10×16 KAS S lens that meets the demand for high-resolution 8K sports and documentary productions. The 10×16 KAS S, which expands Canon’s series of ultra-high resolution 1.25″ 8K broadcast camera lenses, including the UHD-Digisuper 51 そしてその 7×10.7 KAS S, offers impeccable optical performance in a compact form factor.
Constructed with special glass elements such as fluorite, Hi-UD lenses and large-diameter aspherical lenses, the 10×16 KAS S helps reduce chromatic aberrations, spherical aberrations and other defects that diminish image quality.
Weighing only 2.94 kilograms, the 10×16 KAS S is precision engineered for 8K performance in a portable and durable lens. With a 10x optical zoom range, from 16mm to 160mm, and a constant f/2.8 aperture, this lens delivers consistent image quality across its entire focal length range, from wide angle to telephoto. Along with Canon’s full range of 4K broadcast lenses, the addition of the 10×16 KAS S to the 8K broadcast lens lineup meets current industry demands and supports future production needs.
