Song Suffragettes embraces streaming with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2
Le Magie noire Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 and ATEM Mini Pro mixer allow Song Suffragettes to stream their show.
Nashville record industry executive Todd Cassetty founded Song Suffragettes in 2014, a collective that aims to fight gender inequality in the recording industry by increasing opportunities and radio coverage for female country music singers. With a rotating line-up of performers, each live webcast show features five female singer-songwriters and a cover of a song performed by all of them. In its ninth year, Song Suffragettes has had more than 350 women on stage, with nearly 60 of them landing publishing deals et 26 getting record deals. These include names such as Kelsea Ballerini, GAYLE, Carly Pearce, Lainey Wilson and Tenille Arts.
Aiming to webcast her weekly concerts from her Youtube channel, which has 4.7 million views, Cassetty decided to target a workflow centred on Magie noire solutions. Specifically, Song Suffragettes uses a Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 and three Caméra de cinéma de poche 6K units, whose signals are sent to an ATEM Mini Pro mixer connected to a Blackmagic Video Assist 7″ 3G device. The streamed material is recorded directly from the mixer onto an external SSD, as are the individual camera signals. After each weekly broadcast, the complete programme is posted on the Song Suffragettes YouTube channel. In addition, at the end of each show, the team selects three or four specific songs to share on YouTube from the signals recorded from each camera.
Cassetty opted for the Caméra de cinéma de poche 6K because the solution allows, among other advantages, recording directly from the camera onto an SSD drive, in real time. Other key features of the capture system that Cassetty liked were its Super 35 sensor and the camera’s ability to record gyroscopic information from the internal motion sensor, which is “extremely useful in stabilizing the footage”. He also adjusts camera settings in real time from the ATEM Mini Pro, which “comes in handy because our stage lighting is not always as even as we’d like”. Similarly, by including macros, Song Suffragettes has real-time graphics in its streaming broadcasts.
"Youtube is an important platform for our brand, and we post hundreds of singer/songwriter performances on our channel. Building out a Blackmagic-based workflow for Song Suffragettes was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made,” concludes Cassetty.
