Blackmagic - DaVinci Resolve - Colortive - Comfortless

The South Korean company Colortive, based in Seoul, has decided to rely on DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic the post-production of 'Comfortless', a 15K resolution film aimed at 360-degree 3D virtual reality devices.

Comfortless, directed by the filmmaker Gina Kim, is the final installment in a trilogy focused on the sad reality of the facilities where “military comfort women” lived in the 1970s and 1980s. To this end, the film's production team has turned to Colortive, a post-production services company that has carried out important work in the I+D on the treatment of content in resolutions 12K, 8K y 6K for conventional platforms, stereoscopic 3D and virtual reality.

Wonju Park, responsible for managing the project together with Sooyeon Chun, explains the visual requirements and needs of the film: “Gina Kim tried to make the most of the characteristics of virtual reality and achieve a supernatural aesthetic and tonality. She wanted to recreate this historical moment with a different concept of “reality”, in the most vivid way possible, using virtual reality technology as a medium or tool.”

To achieve these creative and technological challenges, Colortive provided three main services using DaVinci Resolve Studio: grading, image refinement and mastering of virtual reality images. The Korean company was in charge, in this way, of uniting the images shot with 4K cameras until getting 3D stereoscopic material virtual reality in 15K resolution.

Choosing DaVinci Resolve

Park, facing the post-production of Comfortless, did not hesitate to lean on DaVinci Resolve given that it provides “a work system that can be trusted.” “When working in post-production on such high-resolution material, the flexibility and scalability of DaVinci Resolve helped us create a reliable system and design various workflows to suit our needs,” he adds.

The technician Colortivehighlights the high demands of the project, which required the management of an “enormous amount of data”, an issue that was resolved by Blackmagic software with “various flexible solutions to improve the performance of the work system”, “the possibility of collaborating in real time” and “very efficient colorimetry tools that allowed us to easily create the environment, both in terms of the visual and auditory aspects, and adapt and optimize it for VR content.”
