RTVE will begin regular broadcasts in UHD 4K starting February 15, 2024
The Board of Directors of the Corporation RTVE has given the green light, unanimously by its members, to begin regular broadcasts in Ultra High Definition (UHD-4K) starting next February 15, 2024.
To date, and while the broadcasts of the television channels are maintained in standard quality (which will be turned off at the latest on February 14, 2024) and in High Definition (HD), RTVE contributes to the broadcasts in tests that are being carried out. with authorization from the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures (SETID) by Cellnex Telecom (in all provincial capitals of Spain and some additional cities, with coverage of just over 60% of the population), Axion (in Andalusia), Castilla-La Mancha Telecom (in Castilla-La Mancha) and television (with a broadcaster in Galicia).
Through Royal Decree 16/2023, of January 17, which modifies the Regulation on the use of the public radio domain, approved by Royal Decree 123/2017, of February 24, and Royal Decree 391/2019, of June 21, which approves the National Technical Plan for Digital Terrestrial Television and regulates certain aspects for the release of the second digital dividend, the period initially planned for turning off Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasts in standard quality (SD) was modified and began to broadcast only in high definition (HD), according to the provisions of the current National Technical Plan for DTT .
Since last November 20, Spanish Television broadcast directly in the multiplex under test, with authorization from the SETID, matches from the Qatar World Cup, in UHD, with HDR quality (the highest) and with Dolby Atmos sound, using a full channel within this multiplex.
RTVE's intention, until next February 14, 2024, is to maintain the broadcast of its channel (in tests) TVE UHD. And as of February 15, 2024, start broadcasting regularly on the RGE2 multiplex in UHD, occupying the capacity assigned to RTVE in that RGE2 multiplex by the current National TDT Technical Plan.
