Spanish cinema in theaters, still far from pre-pandemic figures, grows by 94% in 2022
The 2022 Cinematography Statistics published by the Ministry of Culture and Sports confirms the commitment of viewers to Spanish cinema with a growth of 94%, although the balance is still far from the pre-COVID exhibition.
According to the Cinematography Statistics 2022, the number of films exhibited in one of the 3,650 exhibition halls distributed throughout the national territory was 2.521, of which 643 were premieres. These figures represent interannual increases of 18.9% and 15.6%, respectively. The total number of spectators stood at 59.1 million in 2022, which represents a year-on-year increase of 41.7%, while total collection amounted to 367.5 million euros, 45.9% more compared to 2021.
Since 2020, the interpretation of the results of this initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Sports takes into account the effect of the COVID-19 crisis, which especially affected the activity of movie theaters. In that sense, declines continue to be recorded in the three-year period, compared to 2019, of 43.6% in viewers and 40.2% in revenue. The good news is the growth of Spanish cinema, which almost doubles results in both spectators and box office receipts. With 705 films exhibited in 2022, viewers amounted to 13.1 million and the collection amounted to 77.5 million euros. These figures represent year-on-year increases of 94.1% and 95.3%, respectively, although they still have not reached pre-pandemic numbers.
As far as foreign films are concerned, they received 46.1 million viewers in 2022 and obtained a collection of 289.9 million euros, which represents an interannual recovery of the 31.6% and 36.6%, respectively. These values also continue to be far from those registered in 2019, with three-year decreases of 48.2% and 44.5%.
