Pay television in Portugal adds 128,000 subscribers in the first quarter
The National Communications Authority (ANACOM) highlights in its latest report that pay television services in Portugal grew by 128,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2023.
ANACOM attributes this increase to the growing popularity of FTTH technology, which added 244,000 new accesses (+9.6%) in the quarter and now represents 2.8 million pay television subscribers.
At the end of March 2023, the FTTH corresponded to 61.7 percent of total subscribers to pay television, followed by cable television (27.8 percent); satellite television, DTH (7.8 percent); and ADSL (2.7 percent). The penetration rate of pay television services reached 97% (+2.7% compared to the first quarter of 2022).
The number of residential subscribers to pay television services was 4 millions (89 percent of the total), growing by 103,000 (+2.6 percent), while the remaining 497,000 were non-residential (+5.5 percent).
Meo (Altice Portugal), market leader, obtained the largest share of subscribers (41.2%), ahead of NOS (36.9%), Vodafone (18.9%) and Nowo (2.9%). Meo (+0.5 percent) and Vodafone (+0.4 percent) recorded growth in the reference period, while NOS (-0.7 percent) and Nowo (-0.3 percent) experienced a drop in the number of subscribers.
