'Unicorn Wars' triumphs at the Goya 2023 with an author's animation proposal

Unicorn Wars of Chelo Loureiro, Iván Miñambres and Nicolás Schmerkin has received an ovation from the FIBES of Seville after winning the Goya 2023 for Best Animated Feature Film against four other very original proposals that have demonstrated the versatility of national animated cinema.

The Spanish animated film of the year has managed to expand the universe of the short Unicorn blood to offer a brave political reflection half hidden in a world of glitter, teddy bears and unicorns. The film was the second Goya of the night for Ivan Miñambres, which also won the award for best animated short for the production of Loop.

miñambres, happy after receiving the award, has looked back, recognizing that the path to materializing Unicorn Wars It has not been easy: “The animation is super complicated. Each project we start requires a different team and methodology, especially when we make arthouse or boutique films.” Laurel shares his colleague's opinion: “Cinema is an obstacle course, but animation is even more complex, even if it is due to the number of years. And auteur animated films, even more so.”

Looking at the future of the film, Miñambres hopes that this Goya 2023 will allow Unicorn Wars have more exhibition opportunities: “We want to reach more cinemas, more sessions and more audiences. (…) I hope that awards like this will help us get the film to more platforms and that our next project can be more accessible to the general public.”
