MWC to host first end-to-end livestream of 5G to smartphones

Rohde & Schwarz, Qualcomm Technologies y Cellnex will show in the Mobile World Congress 2022 the potential of 5G Broadcast with a complete end-to-end live streaming demonstration.

In a live demonstration of content delivery to smartphone devices, and showcasing Broadcast/Multicast capabilities over 5G, content provided by Cellnex Telecom will be retransmitted using an over-the-air 5G Broadcast signal in Barcelona.

Para llevar a cabo esta demostración en vivo, Rohde & Schwarz proporcionará su solución de extremo a extremo compatible con 3GPP, which includes an emitter R&S TLU9 5G Broadcast enabled, supported by a Spinner filter, and Broadcast Service and Control Center (BSCC2.0) acting as core network.

Durante la demostración se transmitirá una señal en directo por ondas en el interior de la Fira Gran Vía de Barcelona, desde el stand de Rohde & Schwarz, utilizando sistemas de antena sectorizados suministrados por Cellnex, a un dispositivo de prueba con formato de smartphone de Qualcomm Technologies.

The 5G Broadcast solution is based on the feature set of the 3GPP Rel-16, which works in receive-only mode (ROM), Free-To-Air (FTA) and without the need for a SIM card (SIM-free reception). The dedicated 5G broadcast mode will be demonstrated with a stand-alone high power tower (HPHT) broadcast infrastructure while operating within the UHF band.

Ramon Salat, broadcast commercial director of Cellnex Spain, highlights that “having the appropriate network will be key to developing 5G Broadcast services. “Cellnex has the right combination of high and low towers to offer good population and territory coverage.”

The contents included in the transmission will include the news channel of Radio Televisión Española, 24 Horas, La 1 and Radio 4. The contents are encoded with encoders provided by the Spanish manufacturer Cherry 21.
