SVOD market will reach 1.75 billion subscribers in 2027
El informe SVOD Forecasts Update of Digital TV Research points to an imminent growth of 550 million subscribers in the SVOD world, adding 1,750 million in 2027.
According to the study, global SVOD (subscription video on demand) subscriptions will increase by 550 million between 2021 and 2027 until reaching the 1.75 billion. China and the United States will together represent the 48% of the world total in 2027.
Three US platforms will control half of the world's SVOD subscriptions by 2027: Netflix, with 282 million and a growth of 60 million despite its “maturity”; Disney+, which will add 146 million subscribers between 2021 and 2027 to reach a total of 276 million (and will surpass Netflix in 2028); and Amazon Prime Video, which will be consolidated with 256 million. It also highlights the growth of HBO Max, which will add 65 million subscribers to reach 90 million in 2027; and Paramount+ (including SkyShowtime), which will increase by 55 million subscribers to reach 88 million in 2027.
Simon Murray, analista principal de Digital TV Research, points out an interesting fact about the competition of the Chinese and US markets in the VOD world: “China and the US had a similar number of gross subscriptions at the end of 2021. Due to government pressure, China's growth is slowing. slowing, with 374 million subscriptions in 2027. The United States will continue to grow, with 456 million subscriptions expected by 2027.”
