Cartoon Forum, the European forum for co-production of animated series that will be held in Toulouse from September 20 to 23 in person, announces the projects that will participate in this edition.

European animation emerges from the pandemic with 84 new series projects television, miniseries and special programs in which studios from 21 countries in the region participate, including Spain, which has six projects at the event. For the tenth consecutive year, the capital of the French region of Occitania is once again the headquarters of Cartoon Forum, which since its creation in 1990 has helped promote the co-production and distribution of European animated series for television and new platforms.

The pitching sessions and contacts between professionals will continue to be the main activities in this new edition of Cartoon Forum, which will make some changes to its operation to comply with current health measures. The projects will be presented to professionals in the audiovisual sector from around the world, including broadcasters, distributors, investors, streaming platforms and potential co-producers, among others.

Series from Catalonia, Extremadura and the Basque Country

With six projects from Catalonia, Extremadura and the Basque Country, the presence of Spanish animation in this forum is similar to that of last year.

Half of the projects are aimed at children: little heroes of the Catalan Peekaboo Animation (Yo, Elvis Riboldi); The Saskatoons, in which Pikkukala, a production company based in Helsinki and Barcelona, ​​participates as co-producer; and The VHS gang, from the Extremaduran studio The Glow Animation.

Two projects for preschool audiences were also selected: Kima & Amik, from the Basque production company Lotura Films, and The Wawies, a cut-out animation series developed by the Catalan company Imagic TV.

Finally, in the segment of series for young and young-adult audiences, it stands out The Monsters Valley, produced by Barcelona's WKND.

The projects were chosen by the selection committee among 141 proposals.

Trends

With 41 of the 84 projects, series aimed at children between 6 and 11 years old continue to gain ground in Cartoon Forum, while series for preschoolers represent about a third of the selection (24 projects). Finally, there are 14 projects aimed at young adults and adults, 17% more than last year.

The 2D animation is still the most used by European producers (56%), although 3D series still reach 28% of the total, compared to 20% in 2020.

Las francesas The Shipowners (Abyss Special Case Unit), Around Midnight (Freaked Out), Dandelooo (It’s Your Body!), Xilam Animation (Piggy Builders), Cyber Group Studios (The McFire Family), y Ellipsanime Productions (Under the School); the Irish Treehouse Republic (Freddy Buttons Wacky Mysteries); la alemana Ulysses Film Production (Butterfly Academy); the Belgian Lunanime (Tommy Pepper); y the Portuguese Canned Sardine (Pete & Bern’s y The Saskatoons) are some of the producers that return to Cartoon Forum to present their new projects.

Along with works by some of the most renowned studios in Europe, the selection also includes works by young producers and new talents who come with their first projects.

Four of them were selected through Cartoon Springboard, the project presentation event for new animation talents that has been held in Valencia since 2019: Anselmo Wannabe (IBRIDO Studio, Italy), Hygge (Dreamin’ Dolphin Film, Alemania), What it Takes (Les Astronautes, France, and “Space Ham” (MiniCosmos, Denmark). The next edition of Cartoon Springboard will take place from October 26 to 29 and the call to participate is open until September 2.
