Sound Devices Scorpio and 888, first portable mixer-recorders with integrated cloud technology
Frame.io technology uses timecode and metadata to intelligently sync Scorpio and 888 stereo mix tracks with compatible camera files.
Sound Devices has revealed that the recorders Scorpio and the 888 can now upload directly to the new camera-to-cloud (C2C) subscription system of Frame.io, making them the first portable mixers with this innovative feature.
The Scorpio and 888 upload to C2C via an Ethernet port located on the rear of the unit. Since uploading occurs in the background, professionals can continue recording audio while backing up their files to the cloud or sending them to post-production. C2C support was recently released as part of the Series 8 firmware v8.00, which can be downloaded for free from the manufacturer's website.
Paul Saacs, director of design and product management, highlights that “with the Frame.io infrastructure, we can upload the capture directly to the cloud. It is a revolutionary leap that allows the creative post-production process to be almost immediate. It is the 'holy grail'. We are not streaming audio to the cloud, but uploading audio files to the cloud in the background seamlessly.”
“There is no need to wait for the loading to finish. You can simply continue shooting another take, so it doesn't affect the pace of your work. You can also send the stereo mix along with the ISO channels to the editing room so editors can choose what they want to work with. It is a creative improvement,” he adds.
C2C offers more than just uploading files to the cloud. Frame.io technology uses timecode and metadata to intelligently sync tracks Scorpio and 888 stereo mix files with compatible camera files. These dailies can be accessed immediately so that post-production can get underway while it is being produced.
C2C also automatically organizes files into folders using metadata. Cloud devices, such as the Scorpio and 888, authenticate to a Frame.io project to ensure that files are delivered securely over an encrypted connection.
Michael Cioni, global senior vice president of innovation at Frame.io, maintains that “Frame.io C2C is a disruptive technology that changes the traditional linear filming process by allowing remote filming and post-production teams to work together at the same time. “This level of collaboration brings creative teams together and allows them to work faster and more collaboratively than ever,” he added.
In addition to C2C support, Series 8 firmware v8.00 introduces other new features for the 833, 888 and Scorpio: a copy channel configuration menu, bus name editing, a channel color menu for the CL-16, among others.
