Varicam Pure: Panasonic and Codex join forces to offer a unique capture system
Panasonic's new proposal records pure uncompressed RAW signals at up to 120 fps on the Codex Capture Drive 2.0 device.
Panasonic has presented at IBC 2016 a new version of the VariCam 35 adapted to cinematographic needs, which includes a recorder developed jointly with Codex, capable of capturing uncompressed 4K RAW.
The VariCam Pure is the latest addition to Panasonic's family of professional cinema products, an initiative that has emerged from collaboration with Codex. This new device combines the head of the current VariCam 35 with the new CodexV-RAW 2.0 recorder, ideal for series and cinema.
The V-RAW 2.0 recorder is installed directly on the back of the VariCam 35 camera head. The camera therefore retains the same Super 35 sensor, more than 14 stops of latitude and the dual native ISO recording option, as the original VariCam 35.
Luc Bara, Product Manager at Panasonic, highlights that “the new VariCam Pure camera system records pure uncompressed RAW signals at up to 120 fps on the industry standard Codex Capture Drive 2.0 device, widely used by many camera systems, installations post-editing and studies. There is significant demand for uncompressed RAW recordings in the high-end market. The modular concept of the VariCam has allowed us to respond to this demand.”
“We have also taken feedback from filmmakers and camera operators and ensured that the VariCam Pure is a rugged, compact and lightweight camera, weighing only five kilos,” he adds.
Codex will provide the most efficient dailies and archive workflow available across your entire production suite. Additionally, the Codex Virtual File system allows users to transfer many file formats, including Panasonic VRAW, Apple ProRes, and Avid DNxHR.
Using the Codex Capture Drive solution enables a reliable workflow from digital capture to post-production. Along with the original camera negative, frame-accurate metadata (such as lenses and CDL data) can also be captured, simplifying production and post-production tasks, as well as realizing time and cost savings.
The commercialization of the V-RAW 2.0 recorder for the Varicam Pure is planned for the end of this year.
