An ARRI Alexa to relaunch the IMAX format?
ARRI and IMAX are working on the development of an IMAX camera based on the Alexa 65 with support for this panoramic format.
Boost format IMAX with a digital camera that eliminates the historical headache of facing a production for this panoramic system is the objective they pursue ARRI and IMAX itself.
The Alexa camera for IMAX will be based on the 6K Alexa 65 incorporating additional technology developed with IMAX.
The Alexa 65, which is only available through ARRI Rental, has also caught the attention of Marvel, whose plans include using it for photography in the sequel to Captain America (Civil War). IMAX software will then be used for editing.
The Alexa 65 has dazzled numerous filmmakers since its introduction last fall. Director of photography and two-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, Birdman) is using it to film The Revenant, by director Alejandro G. Inarritu's. Oliver Stone is also using the camera for the Snowden recording and Yimou Zhang will do so for The Great Wall.
