11% of Europeans choose IPTV to receive television compared to 35% for satellite and 27% for DTT
In Spain, and on a base of 17.21 million homes, satellite and cable maintain their position compared to 2013, while IPTV technology experiences a notable growth of 119.7%.
The international satellite operator SES has presented the results of the Satellite Monitor, the annual study prepared by the DYM Institute that analyzes the television market in Europe, at the end of 2014, based on the technologies used for its reception: DTT, satellite, cable and IPTV. The company has also presented the data corresponding to the Spanish market.
Based on 254 million homes with TV in Europe, the study concludes that satellite is the technology preferred by Europeans to receive television with 90.03 million homes (35%), followed by terrestrial technology (27%), cable (27%) and IPTV (11%). SES continues to increase its leadership in Europe. 71% of homes with direct satellite reception (DTH) in 2014 do so through their satellites (64 million homes).
In Spain, and on a base of 17.21 million homes, the report reflects that satellite and cable maintain their position compared to 2013, while IPTV technology experiences notable growth (+119.7%) and DTT reduces its presence by 8.6%.
Specifically, at the end of 2014, the satellite was present in 2.66 million Spanish homes (16% of the total). The figures confirm the stability of recent years. Of the total, 1.62 million homes have pay television receivers through Canal+, while 1.05 receive free-to-air television via satellite.
As for the rest of the technologies, DTT reduces its reception from 12.06 to 11.56 million homes, cable remains the same, although with a slight increase (from 1.42 to 1.43 million homes). and IPTV grows (from 0.71 to 1.56 million homes).
High Definition
In Europe, compared to 38 million at the end of 2013, 47 million households watched satellite television in high definition at the end of 2014. Of these, 77% did so thanks to SES satellites. At the end of last year the company transmitted more than 6,500 television channels around the world, of which 1,800 were in HD, of which 537 correspond to Europe.
In Spain, and also with respect to HD, once again all technologies improve their figures compared to the previous period and the diffusion of this technology grows by 19% as a whole. The satellite grows by 5% to 1.17 million, of which 660,000 thousand (30,000 more than in the previous period) are Canal+ iPlus users and therefore receive 35 HD channels exclusively through SES. Cable reaches 790,000 homes and grows 8%; IPTV grows by 21% and broadcasts HD content in one million Spanish homes. DTT grows by 7% and reaches 6.39 million homes in high definition.
Likewise in Spain, and through the main orbital position (19.2 east) of SES, 48 free European High Definition channels and a demo channel in Ultra High Definition, the next television standard, are accessible.
