NSG Exo will enable operators to bring broadband services to new markets and applications.

NSG Exo

Harmonic has introduced NSG Exo, a cost-effective cable edge device that enables the deployment of a distributed access architecture (DAA) over coaxial networks. NSG Exo, a distributed Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) system, enables service providers to move their RF distribution requirements from the headend or core to further integrate them into the network, simplifying the design and operation of network to address power and space constraints, provide service flexibility, and reduce operating and capital expenses.

NSG Exo is one of the first products in the industry to support a DAA architecture. Supporting industry standards, this CCAP-ready system includes DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS/J-DOCSIS CMTS specifications and will soon include universal edgeQAM capability. By delivering video, data and voice (triple play) services over coaxial networks using a single, low-power device, NSG Exo helps cable and telecom service providers and entrepreneurs generate revenue opportunities by accessing an untapped customer base, such as residential complexes, hotels and university campuses.

Nimrod Ben-Natan, senior vice president and general manager of the cable end business unit at Harmonic, highlights that “NSG Exo is Harmonic's first CMTS available on the market and is our first foray into the DAA market. NSG Exo complements our NSG Pro CCAP platform by delivering a superior level of flexibility, RF performance and bandwidth savings for extensive fiber deployments, establishing Harmonic as the industry's leading provider with a portfolio of edge products of cable that includes centralized and distributed CCAP solutions. Harmonic’s NSG, NSG Pro and NSG Exo products are based on the company’s common CableOS operating system.”

Performance and cost savings

Using GigE, GPON or EPON networks, NSG Exo offers exceptional performance in delivering high bandwidth services to dense areas of coaxial infrastructure. Significant capital expenditure savings are realized as operators can now use a single device to deploy high-quality, high-speed triple play services.

This new compact solution reduces headend space and power requirements to a minimum. Its low energy consumption of only 45 watts allows significant savings in operating costs. Part of a flexible edge architecture, where a simplified unified access network enables operators to deliver differentiated residential, business and wireless services across any access medium, the NSG Exo also helps keep pace with business and industry requirements. constantly evolving, such as the transition to DOCSIS 3.1.

NSG Exo can be easily integrated into the operator's network by leveraging DOCSIS back-office provisioning and DOCSIS cable modems. Initially, NSG Exo is available in an indoor rack, in a 19-inch chassis format with 1 rack unit (RU). NSG Exo is currently undergoing various testing processes and will be available on the market in the third quarter of 2014.
