Editshare collaborative video in K2000
The Galdákano production company installs an EditShare collaborative work system with 8TB of storage. The main advantage is that Avid Liquid and Autodesk 3ds Max and Combustion stations can work simultaneously on the same material in this installation.
The producer of the popular ETB2 program pass it on, and one of the most prolific providers of series and documentaries in the Basque Country, K2000, have relied on a shared work environment implemented on an Editshare solution. The needs of the Pásalo space, with a multitude of news and gags produced with very little time before broadcast, have led K2000 to replace its complex workflow on tapes and numerous work islands to install a collaborative video system where All editors can work on the same material without losing time or video or audio quality in successive copies. According to Javier Bilbao, technical director of K2000, “we were looking for a digital shared storage solution that would allow editors to share material and work simultaneously. “We needed the most direct path to produce and go on air immediately.”
After evaluating several alternatives, the K2000 technical department finally opted for an Editshare solution installed in 3 RUs with 8 TB storage and great ease of future scalability if necessary. It is a NAS solution where the hardware and software have been optimized for the use of collaborative video, allowing any editor to capture, access or share the material in real time from a common pool of media files.
Advantages
One of the advantages of this Editshare solution is that both Avid and Final Cut Pro systems can collaborate on the network in numerous stations, working at the same time on the same project with direct access to each of the sequences and bins. From start to finish this Editshare solution allows any of the K2000 editors to work from offline to HD without compression. The production company's Editshare is installed with 10 Gigabit of connectivity between the Editshare server and the 10Gb HP ProCurve switch. In total, in the case of the K2000 installation, there are fourteen Avid Liquids connected to the switch through a 1 Gb connection. Along with the Avids, there are also several stations for Autodesk, 3dsMax and Combustion graphics, or other connected production and broadcast systems. to the same EditShare network.
With this configuration, K2000 journalists have instant access to all the material while preserving signal quality at all times. A very important step if we take into account that before installing this system, journalists edited their pieces in an A/B roll edition, copying video sequences from tape to tape and re-recording over and over again on material already recorded with the consequent deterioration of the signal. Now, the material is ingested into DV25 only once, storing it on the server and making it available to any editor at the same time it is ingested. Once each piece has been edited, the material is ready for inclusion in the playout without any intermediate steps.
Finally, it should be noted that this EditShare solution presents very friendly setup and configuration tools, so as Javier Bilbao states, “you don't need to be an IT engineer to manage storage or add new users, permissions or spaces. of work".
